“Addressing Cosatu’s national congress in Midrand on Wednesday, Ms Oliphant said while the federation was the most vocal critic of labour broking, some of its affiliates’ investment arms had stakes in such companies. She scolded the unions for placing emphasis on profit at the expense of servicing workers. Ms Oliphant said the investment arms sometimes did business in the very sector in which the unions were organising. The unions then took 80% of the returns for “administrative costs” and 20% was left for workers and in some cases investment companies were registered in the name of individual union leaders, she said. This means Cosatu is fighting for a ban on labour brokers while acting in cahoots with companies using labour brokers”.
